What the brewers say

"Imperial Stout aged in bourbon barrels."

What our panel thought

“Bakery aroma of vanilla, dark chocolate, honey, strawberry fruit leather, coconut, cinnamon, almond, burnt marshmallows. Flavor delivers that sweetness but is tempered by roast malt, oak tannin, and pleasant alcoholic warmth. Nice balance of sweetness and bitterness. Oak really pops in the finish with a nice hint of vanilla.”

What our editors thought

“Anise and sharper roast on the nose with honey and vanilla underneath. The sip rolls in like a sweet bourbon tide, supported by chocolate and cinnamon-like spice, giving up some definition in pursuit of ease.”

Verboten Brewing Vanilla Not a Speck of Light

“Aroma of well-rounded dark roast permeated by vanilla; sweet chocolate with hazelnut notes. Big roast flavor with boozy vanilla, chocolate, and hazelnut. Big and chewy. Slight oxidation. Sweet chocolate and nutty notes linger into the finish.”

Westbound & Down Brewing Company Single Barrel Select: Heaven Hill Double Absence

“Alcohol and dark-roast cold-brew coffee dominate the aroma, with chocolate and mellow vanilla beneath. Coffee highlights the flavor, with bittersweet chocolate, brown sugar, dates, dark caramel. Intriguing port-like complexity.”

Verboten Brewing Barrel-Aged Cake or Death

Solid chocolate and espresso aroma; moderate barrel and whiskey. Notes of light cherry, raisin, soy sauce, marmite. An explosion of roast and fruit in the flavor: rich chocolate-espresso, esters of cherry, blueberry, fig, and black currant. Subdued barrel. Roasty-dry finish. Lovely richness and balance.
