What the brewers say

"Imperial stout aged in maple syrup bourbon barrels with Indian vanilla beans."

What our panel thought

"Roasted malt aroma with vanilla focus, dessert-like chocolate cake, with oak-barrel vanillin and boozy notes. Medium-full body, not overly sweet, roast-coffee finish and complementary dark-fruit esters. Vanilla and barrel blend nicely. Warming, pleasant alcohols."

What our editors thought

"Earthy nose with orange zest, floral spice, vanilla, and light herbs. The sip is clunky, bull in a china shop, as rough caramel and roast malt bump into earthy vanilla, with no manners and minimal panache."

Cerebral Brewing Rye Barrel Aged Trophy Hunt

Nibs poke through chocolate vapor trail; more vanilla, smelling like a high-quality chocolate bar. Light booze and oak. Over-the-top chocolate cake flavor, sweet with significant bitter edge. High alcohols—could be smoother.

Westbound & Down Brewing Company Single Barrel Select: Heaven Hill Double Absence

“Alcohol and dark-roast cold-brew coffee dominate the aroma, with chocolate and mellow vanilla beneath. Coffee highlights the flavor, with bittersweet chocolate, brown sugar, dates, dark caramel. Intriguing port-like complexity.”

Core Brewing & Distilling Co Batch 01 - Barrel Aged Barleywine

Decadent, complex, and deep aroma with huge toffee, banana-nut bread, pipe tobacco, figs, raisins, chocolate, vanilla, leather, and dark cherry all vying for attention. All of the aromas beautifully transition into the flavor profile with an added coconut, German chocolate cake, and caramel complexity. Warming, velvety fullness without being filling or cloying in body and flavor, but the mouthfeel is not quite as viscous as some may want. Some alcoholic warmth is present, but it’s not overly harsh.
