What the brewers say

Brewed with walnuts, aged in rum barrels, conditioned on coconut and vanilla beans.

What our panel thought

Boozy nose with aged dark-malt character, hints of dried cherries and soy sauce. A bit thin, but with rich dark fruit and chocolate. Dry roasted finish. Strong rum and vanilla notes add a nice spiciness to the swallow.

What our editors thought

A captivating umami note grounds the strong, sweet rum overtones in the nose, while a bit of Thai-style spice (sweet yet savory) layers over more round dark-fruit notes giving the very rum-forward sip an almost tiki feel.

The Virginia Beer Company Pocket Square

“Dark chocolate, coconut, coffee, milk, vanilla greet the nose. A kick of bourbon heat starts off the flavor—a complex dance of dark malt, vanilla, coconut mellowed by a sweetness tempered by a bitter backbone.”

Jackie O’s Brewery Oil of Aphrodite

Aromas of raisin, dried fruit, and candied strawberry are more reminiscent of a Belgian dark strong. The fla-vor profile fairly quickly changes course as it delivers a noticeable roast, toast, and chocolate-malt punch with those classic Belgian notes moving to express themselves in the background along with some subtle nutti-ness. The overall package is unusual but surprisingly interesting.

New Image Brewing Co Noema B3

“Nutmeg adds an interesting complexity to the aroma yielding sweet vermouth, wintergreen. Cinnamon flavor up front; licorice, spearmint, nutmeg toward the end that blends with a significant heat, medium finish. A thick and chewy experience that coats the tongue and lingers. Interesting, different, tasty.”
